Avram LEIBOVICI

Unfortunately, we do not have a photograph of Avram.

Avram Leibovici was born on November 15, 1889 in Jassy (Iași), in the Moldavian region of Romania. He was married to Freida Leibovici, née Bisel, born on June 16, 1896. His wife is referred to in some documents under the name of Frarda Bisel Leibovici. Avram was a driver and lived at 2, rue Henri Ranvier in the 11th district of Paris. The couple had been naturalized as French citizens, this having been published in the Journal officiel de la République française (Official Journal of the French Republic) of December 16, 1928.

During the Second World War, Avram Leibovici declared himself to be a French Jew in accordance with the French State’s anti-Semitic law of June 2, 1941.

The couple had a son, Raymond, born on February 1, 1922 in Paris. His father taught him to keep the memory of Romania alive despite the fact that his child had only ever known France. Raymond had a very conventional education. He became politically involved in the 12th section of the French Socialist Party (SFIO). Raymond was deported by convoy 3 from Drancy on June 6, 1942 at the age of 20.

His parents, Freida and Avram, were deported on July 31,1944 as part of convoy 77 from Drancy to Auschwitz. They were never to return.
